In 2002, Yahoo dominated the internet. That year, it had the chance to buy a young search startup called Google for around $5 billion — but Yahoo's management decided the price was too high and walked away. It was one of the most expensive missed opportunities in tech history. In 2008, Yahoo also rejected Microsoft's offer of $44.6 billion. Nine years later, Yahoo's core business was sold for just $4.8 billion, while Google grew into one of the most valuable companies on the planet.

Skype's story is more recent. Launched in 2003, it became so popular that \"skype me\" replaced \"call me\". Microsoft invested $8.5 billion in Skype in 2011 — and then slowly killed it. The app became heavy and confusing, and the company failed to adapt to change when video calls moved to mobile. When the pandemic arrived in 2020, millions of people needed video calls every day. They chose Zoom — simpler, faster, and it just worked. In May 2025, Microsoft finally shut Skype down.

Blockbuster's story is perhaps the most painful. In 2000, a small startup called Netflix offered to sell itself to Blockbuster for just $50 million. Blockbuster's executives laughed at the offer. Today Netflix is worth over $200 billion, and the company that refused to take a risk has exactly one store left. Blockbuster went bankrupt in 2010.
